15th Apr, 2015 Important information regarding latest Google announcement
The digital world is forever changing and adapting to cope with the demands of our online society, and you may, or may not, have read about Google making changes to their mobile search algorithm this month.
From 21st April, Google will be expanding their detection of ‘mobile-friendliness’ as a ranking factor, boosting websites that Google feel are mobile friendly. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and could have a significant impact in search results. However this is nothing to panic about. It simply means that users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results from websites that are optimised for mobile use.
Mobile friendly sites render different layouts depending on the size of the browser screen, and with more people accessing the web through mobile devices, the decision by Google to reward mobile friendly sites just makes sense.
So why go “Mobile Friendly?”*
- 60% of Google traffic is mobile. If you don’t have mobile friendly website, you risk falling in Google’s rankings.
- 50% of people now use their smartphones and tablets to choose what to buy and where to buy products and services.
- 78% of consumers who search for a local business on their smartphone end up making a purchase.
Not sure if your website is “Mobile Friendly?”
You can test your website for ‘mobile-friendliness’ using Google’s free tool. You want to achieve the green result bar with “Awesome! This page is mobile-friendly” message.
If you don’t have the green bar from Google, you should consider optimising your website soon. After all, what is the point of having a fantastic website if people struggle to find it on Google?
What to do next...
If you have run the quick and easy test above and received the green message, then you don’t need to do anything, just continue running your website as usual and be safe in the knowledge that you are right up to date with technological advances.
If you weren’t one of the lucky ‘green light’ customers then there is no need to panic, your website won’t disappear overnight, it’s just time to think about the future.
